Welcome
This guide helps you set up a new Ledger hardware wallet securely. Read every step and follow the official prompts from ledger.com/start and Ledger Live. Security is simple but strict: verify authenticity, keep your recovery seed offline, and confirm transactions on the device itself.
Quick overview
In short: inspect packaging, download Ledger Live from the official website, connect and perform the genuine check, create a PIN, write down your recovery seed, install blockchain apps, and run a small test transaction. Each step reduces risk and helps protect your funds.
Before you begin
- Choose a private workspace and a trusted computer.
- Keep the supplied USB cable and recovery cards ready.
- Type
ledger.com/startinto your browser — do not follow email links or search results for downloads.
Step 1 — Inspect the package
Check for tamper-evident seals and intact packaging. If the box appears opened or altered, contact Ledger support before proceeding. Authenticity checks at this stage reduce the risk of malicious tampering.
Step 2 — Download Ledger Live
- Visit
ledger.com/startand download Ledger Live for your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux). - Prefer the desktop installer for full features; mobile apps are also available for managing certain workflows.
- Optionally verify the installer checksum if you are familiar with checksum verification.
Tip: Ledger Live is the official companion to install apps, add accounts, and manage firmware updates.
Step 3 — Connect and genuine check
Plug the device into your computer and open Ledger Live. The app will execute a genuine check to ensure the device firmware is authentic. Confirm any fingerprints or codes shown by the device and the app. If the genuine check fails, disconnect and contact support.
Step 4 — Initialize and set a PIN
Choose "Set up as new device" if you don’t have an existing seed. Create a PIN on the device when prompted. The PIN protects local access—do not store it with your recovery seed.
Step 5 — Write down your recovery seed
The recovery seed (typically 24 words) is the master backup for your wallet. Write it down in order on the supplied recovery card and store copies offline in separate secure locations. Never store the seed digitally or share it with anyone.
Warning: If someone obtains your recovery seed, they can take your funds. Ledger will never ask for your seed.
Step 6 — Firmware updates & Manager
Ledger Live may prompt a firmware update — accept only updates from Ledger Live or the official site. Then use the Manager inside Ledger Live to install blockchain-specific apps on the device as needed. Manage installed apps to fit device storage.
Step 7 — Add accounts & test
- Add accounts for the cryptocurrencies you use via Ledger Live.
- Generate a receive address and verify it on the device screen before sharing it.
- Send a small test transaction to confirm the full flow before moving larger amounts.
Ongoing security practices
- Always confirm addresses and amounts on your device screen.
- Keep multiple offline backups of your recovery seed in separate locations.
- Do not enter your seed into any computer or website.
- Keep Ledger Live and your operating system updated.
- Consider passphrase-protected hidden wallets or multi-signature setups for high-value holdings.
Troubleshooting
- Device not detected: try a different cable or USB port; check OS permissions.
- Genuine check fails: reconnect and ensure you used the official URL; contact support if the issue persists.
- Forgot PIN: factory reset is required; restore using your recovery seed.
